At Yoga Shala we are following the principles of yoga teaching tradition by Sharath Jois, a legendary yoga master and director at Yoga Institute in Mysore, India.

Our Classes

Ashtanga Yoga

Options are given for challenging asanas of the sequence of the primary Ashtanga yoga, and it is complemented with more detailed guidance on couple of postures or breathing exercises for each class.

Ashtanga Yoga + Pranayama

A standard Ashtanga Yoga class that has a 15-minute Pranayama session in the end. Pranayama is breathing exercises which clear the physical and emotional obstacles in our body to free the breath and so the flow of prana — life energy.

Mysore Yoga

It is way of practicing yoga where you develop your own practice that suits your body best. There is no need to follow the same sequence and pace as the teacher or other practitioners — it is a freestyle class.

Gentle Yoga Flow

Such traditions of Vedic chant are often considered the oldest unbroken oral tradition in existence, the fixation of the Vedic texts (samhitas) as preserved dating to roughly the time of Homer.      

Family Yoga

Bring the whole family together for a fun yoga session. Suitable for all ages, this class promotes connection and well-being through shared practice. Bring kids too!

Meet Our Teachers

Alena Shai

Yoga Teacher,

Ashtanga and Hatha yoga teacher, originally from Belarus and now based in Cyprus where she practices and teaches Ashtanga yoga Primary series, yoga therapy, yoga for pregnant women and moms, yoga for athletes, teenagers, and yoga elders.

Alena and Sharath

In the last 15 years Alena has studied Yoga Asana, Pranayama, Sanskrit language and Vedic texts, yoga philosophy and anatomy extensively with many of senior teachers of contemporary. Alena has 14 years of experience in yoga asana practice as she is a regular Ashtanga practitioner, and from 2009 a student of Sri K. Pattabhi Jois Ashtanga Yoga Institute in Mysore, Karnataka, India. She has been learning a yoga practice from lots of teachers but truly devoted to the authentic of Ashtanga yoga method and Mysore Style. She was authorized by Sharath Jois to teach Primary series in January of 2017 and continues her devotional studies from her longtime yoga teachers Sharath Jois, Eddie Stern, Anurag Vassallo, Govinda Kai, Petri Räisänen, Alexander Smirkin, Graeme Northfield.

Alena is also a Vedic texts chanting practitioner, Indian philosophy scholar which she had been taught by Dr. M.A. Jayashree Sri and M.A.Narasimhan at Anantha Research Foundation, Mysore, India. Alena is a Pranayama certified student of BNS Iyengar at Sri Patanjala Yogashala (R) Vinyasa Asthanga Yoga Research Institute also in Mysore, India. She has also been studying Ayurveda and yoga philosophy under the guidance of Richard Clark and Maxine Conroy at Ashtanga Yoga School in Brisbane, Australia, and she done multiple wellbeing disciplines studies with Deepak Chopra.

Govinda Kai

Govinda Kai was born in California from parents of Japanese ancestry. He was introduced to yoga at the age of 18, in 1977, and since then has been travelling the world and exploring Zen meditation and Ashtanga Yoga. Govinda has been to India 25 times, where he immersed himself in various dimensions of yoga and spiritual practice, including meditation, Vedic chanting and philosophical inquiry.

Govinda Kai has been involved in Martial Arts, meditative disciplines and yoga for over 20 years. He spent 2 years studying Tibetan Buddhism under the tutelage of Sogyal Rinpoche (author of “The Tibetan Book of Living and Dying”), and also studied Aikido with some of the foremost instructors in the world. At 31, Govinda began to devote himself solely to the practice of yoga, studying for 2-3 years with senior Iyengar instructors including Patricia Walden, Rodney Yee, and Judith Lasater. Since 1995, Govinda has practiiced Ashtanga Yoga and visits Mysore, India for 3-6 months every year to study at the Ashtanga Yoga Research Institute. He has also worked extensively with senior Ashtanga practitioners such as Richard Freeman, Tim Miller, Danny Paradise, and Eddie Stern.

I’m new to yoga, how can I practise?

In our school, students of all levels attend the same class, and if you’re a complete beginner, we’ll first tell you what, how, and why to do things, then show you and guide you individually through the whole class. With us, you will always be able to gain the necessary knowledge and support on your path.

I have back pain / other diseases. Can I still practise?

Before starting classes, we will talk with you and discuss the most comfortable practice option for you. We will show you variations of asanas (poses) that will not strain the problem areas, but help them recover.

What if none of the schedule options suit me?

Let’s discuss the possibility of private lessons. Moreover, if we see a lot of requests for a certain time, then we can set up new classes. So please share with us the time that is convenient for you.

Do you have online classes?

Yes, please contact +357 97448449. We believe that yoga should be available to everyone regardless of the location, though we still recommend practicing in the Shala, if possible. Please check the schedule to learn more.

Can I bring my kids to Shala to practise yoga with them?

Yes, you’re welcome to bring your kids to Shala for practising yoga together. We recommend bringing children who are 6 and above.

Can I bring my kids if I have no one to leave them with?

Yes, you can bring your kids if you have no one to leave them with. However, we kindly ask that you ensure they remain respectful and considerate of other practitioners’ focus during their yoga practice. We recommend bringing children who are 6 and above.

Do you have a shower that I can use after the practice?

Yes. We have a shower that you can use after your practice. It is available for free, and we also provide towels and all other bathroom essentials for your convenience, ensuring you have everything you need for a comfortable and refreshing post-practice experience.

Shala Pass Purchase Policy

All classes can be paid online or in cash before class starts. Please request for an electronic or paper receipt.

Please mind that 8 classes pass and One Month Unlimited passes are valid for one month only.

Cancellation & Refund Policy

Please be mindful when scheduling and respect the class and teacher by making every effort to come to class. Any reservations that are cancelled after 4 PM (Cyprus time zone) the day before the class start time are classed as a ‘late cancel’, and the pass will be used.
Due to health conditions confirmed by your therapist or any other force major, missed classes can be refundable. Please contact us if those appear
